Reading Notes: Mahabharata: Karmic Revolution, Part B
For this reading note I want to focus on the births of Pandu's and Dhirarashtra's sons.
Pandu has two wives Kunti and Mardi. They all decided to dwell in the forest. However, because Pandu shot a hermit who was in the form of a deer, the hermit cast a curse on Pandu before he died. The hermit cursed Pandu that he would die when he would lay with a woman. It was fitting because Pandu shot the hermit when he was laying with another hermit who was also in the form of a deer. Kunti and Mardi had not had any children yet. Therefore, Pandu had no heirs to leave behind until Kunti revealed that she could called a god with a mantra and bear his children. One by one Kunti called the gods and had five children. Her first son, Yudhishthir, who was virtuous and patient was from Yama. The next son, Bheem, was strong and fast as the wind and he came from Vayudev, the Wind God. The last son from Kunti and Indra was Arjun. He was destined to be a great warrior. Madri did not have children yet so Kunti called the mantra for her. The Ashwin twins came and she bore two sons Nakul and Sehdev.
If I were to retell these stories I would stick to the main story line because how unique each of their stories were. The only change I would make is to add some dialogue to bring the story to life. I was also confused as to how the sons were still Pandu when Kunti and Mardi lay with gods not Pandu. I may come up with my own answer in my own story.

Dhirarashtra is a blind man. His faithful wife Gandhari chose to blindfold herself for life to be like her husband. Gandhari got pregnant and she was to give birth to one hundred sons. Her pregnancy was not an easy one for she was in constant pain and had nightmares. When the day of childbirth came, she birth nothing but a lump of flesh. Disheartened Gandhari asked for the lump of flesh to be discarded, but the Ved Vyassa who blessed Gandhari in having one hundred sons stopped it from being discarded. Ved Vyassa went to work. He tore the lump of flesh into one hundred pieces and put them in separate containers that had oil. From the containers came one hundred sons as promised. However, the birth of these sons were ominous.
