Reading Notes: PDE Ramayana, Part D

In Ramayana by Public Domain Editions, I have noticed beautiful sentences throughout the story. A sentence that caught my eye was, "the earth and the sea were immediately convulsed, and darkness covered the heavens; lightning flashed and thunder bellowed aloud; the mountains began to break in pieces". In this sentence the use of personification brings the scene to life. Also the details helps with the visualization of the scene. For example, "then the King of Ocean vanished amidst the waves and the heavens brightened again". I can clearly see that image in my head. In the future I will try and incorporate the use of personification and details to bring my story to life.

There is also a common motif in this story. It is deceit. In Rama Attacks Ravana uses his powers to trick Sita. Ravana told Sita that Rama was dead. A rakshasi even brought a bow and a head that looked like Rama's. However, Sita figured out that it was one of Ravana's tricks when Ravana left and the items disappeared. It was all an illusion. Another trickery occurs, but in the battlefield. Ravana sends his son Indrajit tricks Rama into thinking that he had slayed Sita. However, Vibhishan is able to talk sense into Rama. Vibhishan tells Rama that Ravana would not send his son to kill Sita when Ravana wants Sita as his wife.

Least to say, I was shook when I read about Rama and Sita. When they finally got reunited, he told her he did not want her anymore because she was stained; stained from staying at Ravana's place too long even though she was kidnapped. She went through a test prove her purity. Sita went into a funeral pyre and if she did not burn then the Fire would save her. He did because she was innocent. Rama takes her back only to put her in exile shortly after because her people doubted her purity. She has two children in the jungle where she was exiled to. Rama ends up meeting his two children Lava and Kusha. Rama brings Sita back and asks Valmiki to vouch for her purity. Sita gets tested again and asks for the Earth to take her. She is gone and Rama is sad. He makes golden image of Sita.  For this story I would like to change the setting. I think that by putting this scene in a more modern setting I can change the story. Sita will prove her innocence in court, but she will not go back to Rama.
