Reading Notes: PDE Ramayana, Part C
In Ramayana by Public Domain Editions, I am focusing my notes on the story of Sampati and Jatayu. Jatayu and Sampati are brothers who are birds. In the previous chapters of Ramayana, Jatayu made an appearance. When Jatayu sees Ravana kidnap Sita, Jatayu attempts to rescue her. However after Jatayu's noble battle with Ravana, Jatayu laid wounded in defeat. Jatayu soon passed away after Rama found him. He let Rama know what direction Ravana took Sita.
The two bird brothers lived in the Himalayas. They would compete with each other by racing. However, one day Jatayu flew too high and the sun caused him to pass out. Sampati used his wings to protect his brother from the scorching sun. However, Sampati's wings burned and he was unable to fly. Sampati landed in Mount Vindhya where a Saint Nishakara looked at him with pity and passed by. However, Saint Nishakara came out to talk to Sampati. Sampati asked for death, but Saint Nishakara said that him being alive is no coincidence and that he has something to live for. Therefore Sampati lived on. Eventually, Sampati helped Rama by letting him know Sita was and Rama helped Sampati by taking him to his brother Jatayu allowing him to perform the funeral honors.
I decided to focus my notes on this story because I feel that there are multiple gaps in this story. I was confused as to why Jatayu did not go looking for his brother after regaining conscious. I would like o hear from Jatayu's side of story. Jatayu still had his wings so he could have gone to find his brother unless he ran into some trouble too. Another gap in the story is when Saint Nishakara comes back out to talk to Sampati. Why did he not come out to talk to Sampati the first time? He saw that Sampati was injured, but just looked at him with eyes of pity.
